sticks + stones

paradigm design

one of many architectural design studio exercises involves allowing the otherwise randomness of nature to inform spatial design choices.

back to academics
stick + stones + paper + hands = randomized (cuboids + spheres + wavy surfaces)
traditional graduate studio design students were tasked with consciously choosing several sticks and stones to collectively drop onto a small workspace. as a non-traditional design studio student participating in the same studio exercise alongside my peers, i theorized that proper understanding of the exercise could be translated into computerized modeling, to obtain equally design-valid specimens. in 3ds max i developed an ik and scripted scene system modeling parametric randomization of virtual sticks as 3d cuboids, virtual stones as 3d spheres, and virtual hands as virtual wavy surfaces. the following visual argument was accepted as valid specimens for the exercise.
